His mother, Paula, has finally begun her treatment and is staying at a drug rehabilitation center. There are a few competing versions of the myth, but the essential details are this: Chiron is fatally wounded by a poisoned arrow, but because he’s the son of Cronus, he doesn’t die. The two are awkward. Its depiction of issues regarding societal pressures and familial relations is so immensely intricate and moving that it would be more accurate to describe this film to be about a floating lesson, a home cooked meal, a first kiss, and a reconnection.

Moonlight depicts a journey of self-discovery and a queer love story which actually feels probable and tangible.

Moonlight has won two hundred and thirty-five awards, including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Although the film focuses on multiple aspects of identity such as race, poverty, addiction, and homosexuality, this article with primary focus on the queer aspects of the film and how Chiron grew from these experiences.

Unfortunately, as this is reflective of the homophobia, Kevin participates in bullying Chiron the next day. He did not retaliate towards Kevin despite Kevin being the one who attacked him directly. Moonlight reminded me that before being a Point Scholar or a Duke University student, I was— just like Chiron—simply a scared kid trying to defy the world.

The film ends without a clear definition of the relationship between Kevin and Black.

Yet somehow this film managed to touch each one of these areas perfectly, and with the recognition from the Academy, it now holds a distinctive place in cinema history.

Through Moonlight, the gay storyline is told sincerely in its grand, intimate moments, as well as its twisted, melancholic ones.

However, Kevin does reciprocate Chiron’s feelings as they do engage with each out sexually at the beach. Understanding your own Chiron, the thinking goes, can become a source of learning and growth, with the potential for closure. Juan, the father figure, has a conversation with Little about the term, “faggot.” Juan explains that it is a word to make people who identify as gay feel bad about themselves.

In some interpretations of the myth, Chiron hones his skills as a healer by treating his wound. At its core, Moonlight cannot be simply described as a movie about drugs or violence. Chiron is a gay black boy who grows up in a world that doesn’t care about gay black boys. Black is a young adult selling drugs in Atlanta and has become notorious within his community.

After Chiron hears about Kevin getting in trouble for having sex with a girl at school, Kevin has a dream about it. He isn’t like the other boys, and they bully him for it. Instead, the injury simply never heals, and becomes a perpetual source of pain. Chiron must have understood that Kevin was stuck within a system where being queer is wrong.
