Over the years, the Life Is Strange (LIS) franchise has built up its world with several at-times, soul-crushing, heartwarming storylines centred around supernatural plots.

But to say that Double Exposure throws aside the characters of the original (with the exception of Max herself), to say that the most important choice from it becomes a footnote, well that’s just not at all true.

The ending is effective because it’s so relatable and so personal. You could have sweetheart Amanda, or the smuggest dude in your general vicinity?

And I guess that speaks to some people’s truth as well.

That’s what this game is all about, acknowledging the past instead of ignoring it, a fact that so many have missed in both the lead-up to release and the immediate reaction post-launch.

Life is Strange’s Max Caulfield has been pissing me off since 2015.

Expectations and the weight thereof are always omnipresent in a fandom as large as the Life is Strange community, and with that comes toxicity. 

Fans of the franchise weren’t at all happy with the fact that Chloe, the secondary protagonist of the original Life is Strange game, wouldn’t be in this title, regardless of the player’s choices that were made throughout the course of the original game.

This became known as the bae versus bay ending. He’s good-looking, sharp tongued, and highly charismatic, but he’s also manipulative, lies a ton, and puts himself first. He can become romantically involved with Cassidy or Finn McNamara, both of whom he meets in episode 3 of Life is Strange 2. Friends and family of both characters are dead, with no real time for reflection for Max or Chloe. 

An entire town died, specifically because Max couldn’t let go of Chloe.  The action of changing time had a consequence that killed hundreds of people.

That murder is of her best friend, Safi, akin to how the inciting murder in the first game was Chloe. So, Max keeps it all bottled up, and eventually, like overfilling any container, it all spills out and becomes too much for her to bear. High school romances rarely work out, with people drifting apart and changing who they are.

Rachel attracted the attention of many, which is why Chloe was so hurt when she found out Rachel had a sexual relationship with Frank. Back then, it made me angry how closely she stuck with Chloe despite her friend’s utter disregard for her, but in Double Exposure, it’s actually pretty funny how the game plays with bisexual tropes.

For one, Max Caulfield is the stereotype of a bisexual woman: terrified of women.

Max never came to terms with the events of Arcadia Bay. The story of Double Exposure, at the very end of it all, shows that Max is a broken person. Players have noted that Finn fits the “pansexual” label under the LGBTQ+ umbrella.

Jacob Hackerman

Jacob is not a potential romantic interest for Sean, but the two meet because Jacob works on the same farm as Finn and Cassidy.

I’ve written about how mad Chloe makes me in the past, but the SparkNotes version is that she’s selfish, irresponsible, and even controlling at times.

As we have discussed, Chloe is one option (and the most “canon” option based on players’ opinions and comic canon) and Warren is another. By the end of the game, Max is finally on a journey of healing, and only because she looked within herself and realized that she needs to talk to somebody about all of this.
