Home to America’s oldest continuously-operating gay bar, Oakland boasts a vibrant queer culture that can be by turns younger, more Black, more femme, and more family-oriented than its famously queer neighbor across the Bay.

Local gay nightlife long took the form of itinerant, underground parties, but in recent years new community hotspots have enriched Downtown Oakland. Oakland hosts major players like Kaiser Permanente, PG&E, Pandora, and Blue Shield. The vibe’s a mixed bag, with gay and queer events depending on the night, so do yourself a favor and stalk their socials for the latest tea.

With its thriving LGBTQ+ community, and breathtaking natural beauty, Oakland invites you to come and make some memories (just be safe!). Well, for a real escape, head up to the Redwood Regional Park. In the afternoon, the surrounding streets are designated Slow Streets for pedestrians’ and cyclists’ safety, so you won’t be dodging traffic. First, let’s talk neighborhoods because Oakland is a patchwork of them, each with its own flavor.

Plus, it's a stone's throw from some of the city's best dining spots. Over in the Dimond District, it’s all about the laid-back vibes and lush greenery, perfect for those seeking a little respite from the city buzz.
